Welcome to ASEAN

ESTABLISHMENT

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations, or ASEAN, was established on 8 August 1967 in Bangkok, Thailand, with the signing of the ASEAN Declaration (Bangkok Declaration) by the Founding Fathers of ASEAN, namely Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore and Thailand.
Brunei Darussalam then joined on 7 January 1984, Viet Nam on 28 July 1995, Lao PDR and Myanmar on 23 July 1997, and Cambodia on 30 April 1999, making up what is today the ten Member States of ASEAN.

History
On 8 August 1967, five leaders – the Foreign Ministers of Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand – sat down together in the main hall of the Department of Foreign Affairs building in Bangkok, Thailand and signed a document. By virtue of that document, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) was born. The five Foreign Ministers who signed it – Adam Malik of Indonesia, Narciso R. Ramos of the Philippines, Tun Abdul Razak of Malaysia, S. Rajaratnam of Singapore, and Thanat Khoman of Thailand – would subsequently be hailed as the Founding Fathers of probably the most successful inter-governmental organization in the developing world today. And the document that they signed would be known as the ASEAN Declaration.

Purpose

As set out in the ASEAN Declaration, the aims and purposes of ASEAN are
1. To accelerate economic growth, social progress, and cultural development in the region.
2. To promote regional peace and stability.
3. To promote collaboration and mutual assistance on matters of common interest.
4. To provide assistance to each other in the form of training and research facilities.
5. To collaborate for the better utilization of agriculture and industry to raise the living standards of the people.
6. To promote Southeast Asian studies.
7. To maintain close, beneficial co-operation with existing international organisations with similar aims and purposes.

ASEAN CHARTER

The ASEAN Charter serves as a firm foundation in achieving the ASEAN Community by providing legal status and institutional framework for ASEAN. It also codifies ASEAN norms, rules and values; sets clear targets for ASEAN; and presents accountability and compliance.
The ASEAN Charter entered into force on 15 December 2008. A gathering of the ASEAN Foreign Ministers was held at the ASEAN Secretariat in Jakarta to mark this very historic occasion for ASEAN.
With the entry into force of the ASEAN Charter, ASEAN will henceforth operate under a new legal framework and establish a number of new organs to boost its community-building process.
In effect, the ASEAN Charter has become a legally binding agreement among the 10 ASEAN Member States.

ASEAN Motto

ASEAN Flag

The flag of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations was adopted in July 1997, and consists of the official emblem of ASEAN on a blue background. The design of the flag derived from the Emblem of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.
The official symbolism of the flag is detailed in the ASEAN Charter. Blue represents peace and stability, red represents courage and dynamism, white represents purity, and yellow represents prosperity.
The stalks symbolise ASEAN's ten members.
The colours of the flag – blue, red, white, and yellow – represent the main colours of the national flags of all ten ASEAN member states.

ASEAN Emblem

The ASEAN Emblem shall be the official emblem of ASEAN.
The ASEAN Emblem represents a stable, peaceful, united and dynamic ASEAN. The colors of the Emblem — blue, red, white and yellow — represent the main colors of the state crests of all the ASEAN Member States.
The blue represents peace and stability. Red depicts courage and dynamism, white shows purity and yellow symbolises prosperity.
The stalks of padi in the centre of the Emblem represent the dream of ASEAN’s Founding Fathers for an ASEAN comprising all the countries in Southeast Asia, bound together in friendship and solidarity.
The circle represents the unity of ASEAN.

ASEAN Anthem

The ASEAN Way is the official regional anthem of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations. The lyrics were written by Payom Valaiphatchra and the music composed by Kittikhun Sodprasert and Sampow Triudom, the winning entry out of 99 finalists from all ten ASEAN Nations.
The ASEAN Anthem is an expression of ASEAN unity. It also strengthens the sense of ASEAN identity and belonging among the peoples of the region.
The ASEAN Anthem is titled “THE ASEAN WAY”, with musical composition and lyrics as attached.
The ASEAN Anthem is under the copyright of ASEAN with the ASEAN Secretariat as the main body to oversee its proper use.

ASEAN Day
8th August is observed as ASEAN Day.
